Survey Manager: Design Robust Surveys

Preliminary Steps: Basic Guide to Designing Online Surveys

Questions to Ask Before Survey Design

Before you get too involved in online survey design, it’s important to answer a few important questions first.

  1. What do you want to find out? What is the business or organizational issue at hand? Is it an employee satisfaction survey, or are you giving surveys to gain insight on employee engagement? Understanding your research goals helps you better guide your survey design strategy.
  2. Who are you surveying? Is this a customer or an employee survey? Establishing who will be taking your online surveys may seem like an obvious step, but it is important to do so before embarking on how to design a survey.
  3. How do your intended respondents feel about taking online surveys? Do you administer them often? At all? Sometimes survey participants are reluctant to give completely honest and critical responses because they are afraid of negative repercussions. If that is the case, it may be useful to make surveys anonymous, to disguise the identities of respondents.
