What it does- This type of survey question allows respondents to expand on a topic by giving them the ability to write an open-ended response.

When to use: Applied in survey design, this question type is useful when Survey Administrators want the respondent to elaborate on a particular topic.

Advantages: This type of question allows for the respondent to provide an answer in an open-ended field, thereby providing more detail and insight to Survey Administrators. Also available is the ability to ensure the format of the answers received.

Disadvantages: Survey questions of this type should not be used when trying to extract information on the ranking or rating of a particular issue, or when trying to get information from a multi-select question.
